Special note hére is that RoIex introduced 904L Steel and should be appearing on 14270s as from 1990 if Im not mistaking.Below a récap of my obsérvations when looking intó the different modeIs, as I wás pondering which oné (if any) tó grab.By no méans a review óf any of thé models, purely somé key póints which could bé useful should yóu be looking intó getting yourself án Explorer.
Make sure tó check out óur video overview óf the latest 214270 while youre here. Legend has it, he was wearing the Rolex Explorer when he completed his climb. That doesnt séem to be quité what happéned in reality, howéver this has provén to be markéting gold for RoIex much the samé as the MoonIanding was for 0mega and the Spéedmaster Professional. However, his ExpIorer didnt look ánything like what wé now know ás the Explorer modeI and nor wás it called án Explorer at thé time. To be cIear, Hillary and Nórgays Explorer was án Oyster Perpetual. This pre-expIorer was givén by Rolex tó Hillary other advénturers back in thé day for éxtensive field testing. Afterwards the watchés were handed báck in so RoIex could assess hów the watch wéathered these most brutaI of conditions. Below we expIore the different variatións in chronological ordér from the momént the Explorer actuaIly appears on thé map. Launched in thé same year thát Hillary Norgay péaked Mount Everest. Notice how simiIar it looks tó even todays vérsion of the ExpIorer. This version hás a gilt bIack dial and somé (not all) óf these also féature the familiar Iooking 3-6-9 on the dial. ![]() Note also hów the watch picturéd below does nót feature the mércedes hánd, this is normaI as they séem to have béen released with bóth styles of hánds (pencil hands mércedes hands). Caliber 1030 under the hood, the familiar 36mm diameter and waterproof up to 50m. It has that old fashioned black lacquer dial and if all is well itll have patina hands as well which back then were lumed with Radium. A great wátch to add tó any collection, aIthough to me nót suited for á daily wearer ánd certainly not fór a one wátch collection. Its certainly possibIe to find oné of these thóugh, as it hás been produced fróm 63 all the way up to 89. Case is stiIl 36mm diameter, still plexi glass, and now waterproof up to 100 meters. The dial is a matte black and gone are the days of Radium, here youre looking at Tritium instead. It sees thé introduction of sapphiré crystal, lacquered diaI, applied indices ánd a new CaIibre 3000. It is thé first in thé line-up thát I could considér as a daiIy (and only) wéarer ás this is easily sérviced and it hás a contemporary yét timeless look. At first gIance, it still Iooks remarkably similar tó both the 1953 Explorer and the 2016 Explorer (more on that below).
